Moral imperative is based on the values of your culture / society, but if
nothing else, they come from your conscience.

If you are a self-aware person, and other-aware, and honest, then
eventually you will develop a conscience, or face the consequences (i.e.
you become that much less honest, less aware, less compassionate.)

Try it. Opt out of giving a shit, then kill a bird or a mouse, for the
hell of it. See if it was that easy.
