[kj] The Fall

I absolutely understand how people can be irritated by The Fall. On paper they seem farcical, particularly in respect of the adulation broaching no critisism they often receive from people like Peel, and they often take the Krautrock monotony to extremes. Smith has a sort of polarising anti-charisma, and I’m certainly more generously disposed towards them because of several milestone albums whose release coincided with particularly meaningful periods in my life, most notably “Hex Enduction Hour”. I suppose the biting satire of the lyrics has a lot to do with it for me, which is weird as I usually have limited tolerance for “funny” songs as the joke usually only works the first time, but The Fall (I still laugh at “I’m Into C.B.” and “Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul” after nearly 30 years) occupy that special niche for me with the Monochrome Set and Half Man Half Biscuit. Guess I’m a sucker for intelligent lo-fi bands.

Never connected with the Fall. Smith's voice is highly irritating, and rather limited too. The music isn't particularly interesting either- not always bad but just boring more often than not. Never understood the dedicated fanbase they've acquired- they're just not that special.
