[kj] Stirring The Pot....

To be honest, the moment I heard that Big Paul and Benny were taking turns, the first thing that occured to me (after the red mist had settled) was that this would be a temporary arrangement rather than the 'band' Jaz's Myspace message talked about.

If Big Paul is the band's new drummer, there seems little reason why he wouldn't be doing both nights, unless he would be unwilling to play anything he didn't have a hand in first time, leaving Extremities, Pandemonium, Democracy (no loss there, mind you), KJ 2003 and Hosanas off the setlists permamently. I can't see Jaz and Geordie being willing to drop 20 years worth of material because the drummer doesn't want to learn it. And it's not a question of time either, since BPF has six months to learn the Pandemonium album- plenty of time.

So unless the album is going to be done on the same basis as KJ 2003, with Big Paul recording it and leaving it to Benny to tour the material, I can't see how he can be much more than a guest. The album-themed concerts make it very easy to split the gigs between BPF and Benny, but that's not going to be quite so easy with a proper setlist drawn from the band's entire career.

The arrival of gig news, lineup news and album news gave the impression that they were all connected, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If Big Paul was joining the band again, I think he'd probably be doing all the gigs. I think at best we'll get a guest appearance on the new album and back to business as usual. Definitely a wasted opportunity if that is the case.

I have no idea, throwing the question out there. Help to promote a new album? Nothing wrong with that.

That’s three BIG treats
original line up back together, album, and tour. No one has really discussed what the new material is gonna be like. It’s one thing to play the old stuff together on stage again after all this time, but imagine what writing new material together would be like

I am still amazed BPF has come back, and it is great news. I'd be less irritated (and this is entirely subjective) if it wasn't for the money- I can barely afford to go to either of these shows, so it really has to be the one I'm going to get the most entertainment out of. I'm pissed off I even have to make a choice- a few extra quid and I'd just say fuck it and go to both and enjoy it just fine. Still, maybe something will go right before then and I'll see you all at the first night too.

Every silver lining has a cloud, apparently. I'm surprised you're so disappointed Jim - still looks like great news to me.
