Mock Queen and Van Halen and then props to A-Ha…?!

TOTALLY VIOLATING THE MANIFESTO.

(Rant alert. Can’t sleep. Sorry about that.)

Interesting. I really, really rate about three-quarters of the Psychedelic
Furs output. First three albums are majestic; “Mirror Moves” is 30%
splendour (“Alice’s House”, “High Wire Days”, “Ghost In You”), “Midnight To
Midnight” is a genuine hairspray abortion of a record, “Book Of Days” &
“World Outside” are strong, particularly the former, and the two Love Spit
Love albums (especially the second) are essential. Their involvement with
that putrid Molly Ringworm vehicle didn’t help things, though. I was even
prepared to grant the Richard Butler solo album the several listens it took
me to “get it”. Good to see his promo photo turned up here : HYPERLINK

I don’t think anyone need feel guilty about any musical tastes, apart from
bands that are obviously shite, such as Queen and Van Halen. I’ve just been
getting my eldest daughter to scan in all the barcodes on my CDs into a Mac,
nominally to augment her pocket money, but mainly so I can scroll through
pages of stuff and go “Fuck! I forgot I had that!”. Anyway, I think the
first 2 Tears For Fears albums are great, although the third is a steaming
pile of bison ordure. I’ve recently listened to Thomas Dolby, Big Country,
the Icicle Works, A-fucking-ha, Propaganda, a shitstorm of 80’s Sparks, OMD,
Shriekback (the early stuff is superb – up to and including bits of Jam
Science – and occasionally great since), Monochrome Set, Devo, Faith No
More, the mighty Comsat Angels (at least until they were poisoned by Jive,
which put them off course for a bit), Wedding Present, Japan, XTC, Birthday
Party – I started seriously buying records in the 80s, and rarely sell
stuff, much to the annoyance of those around me. Am also in the middle of an
Associates renaissance – “The Affectionate Punch” (the original one),
“Fourth Drawer Down” and especially the terrifying “Sulk”. What a fantastic
band! What an unholy racket! What on Earth possessed Mr Mackenzie to
randomly sing like he’d just been tasered? Why don’t people make singles
like “Kitchen Person” any more? And what an album track “No” is. Just great.

I’ll also defend the Midge Urine Ultravox, at least up to U-Vox. “Rage In
Eden” is great, most of “Vienna” is more than great. It’s mainly the album
tracks that I like, though, as the single tracks weren’t nearly their
strongest. “New Europeans”, “Death In The Afternoon”, “When The Scream
Subsides” etc. etc. It was Midge bussing the Chieftains in that really
killed it for me. And the genius that is Mr John Foxx (who is touring
excellent shows at the mo’) obviously makes the first three Ultravox albums
unassailable, particularly the third (oh, apart from “Blue Light” and “Some
Of Them” – I’m currently doing a version of “When You Walk Through Me” for
someone, and I don’t embark on covers lightly).

Having said that, I strongly disapprove of the youth of today’s musical
taste (same daughter asked me if the Brooke Hogan album is on iTunes –
AAARGH Hulk Hogan skanky daughter in reality TV formulaic cod-R&B bollocks
is coming nowhere near my computer thank you very much) and am currently
nodding my head in a genteel fashion to the progressive sounds of the new
Opeth, which is borderline brilliant apart from the ludicrous outbursts of
death metal vox. What’s all that about then? Am I supposed to be scared,
concerned for his tonsils or merely amused? Actually, the bits he sings
properly sound like the Scorpions, so perhaps I prefer the Type O Negative
stylee. Music’s great, though.

Never liked Psych Furs much, but a better support than the hideousness we
got.
