What an outcome, eh! How terribly depressing that all we can do is make things worse.
I just can't agree that we need to deal with scum like Saddam (et al) in this way - in reality,
there's little that can be done without hardship being passed down to the people. These scumbag
governments are always going to exist & so-called people like Mugabe are loving every minute of
rubbing our noses in it.
Snipe him!

'Nearer' is putting it kindly. Saddam started off as an agent for the CIA.

I'm not even thinking about our reliance on oil, I just think if we get
out now, the place will become warlord/tribe controlled. I think anyone
who calls for removal of troops now doesn't give a shit about the people
left behind.
As soon as we went in, that was the death-sentence for any withdrawal
for YEARS. What a total fuck-up.
You know, Saddam was already dealing with religious unrest, bombings,
etc, on his own soil. The ironic outcome being that he was much nearer to
being on 'our' side when it came to Islamist nutfucks terrorising.
Whereas
the void will now be filled by well established battle-hardened Islamist
nutfucks. We've trained them up...

IMO, yeah, sure we should get out of the country asap. The problem is, we
can't.
We really screwed the pooch invading that country and severely
underestimated the ability of the people there to become self-starters and
govern themselves. Not to mention our presence created a convenient place
for every anti-American faction to gather, organize and fight us on
basically their home ground further destabilizing the place. Now, the
moment we start pulling out in significant numbers, you'll see hardcore
Islamic fanatics like the Taliban taking up the slack and overthrowing
whatever fragile government might be in place and taking the country back to
the stone age.
With oil at an all time high with no end in sight, any further major
destabilization in global fuel sources will be catastrophic to the world
economy. Thus, while there may be a significant drawdown in combat troops
in the next 5 years, we'll likely have a permanent military presence in the
region for decades to come. With countries like China gobbling up more and
more oil, there basically *has* to be a Western (translation: US) military
presence in the region to prevent a full tilt invasion somewhere down the
line from China or even Russia.
