For some reason I don't buy this, unless Lydon was so drunk or drugged
up he was in zombie mode, or it was all the acts of the group of people
he was around and not him. (You can't account for people you happen to
be standing around.)

Lydon's probably one of the most non-racist folks in the music business.
He fawns over reggae in The Filth and the Fury (and elsewhere) and talks
explicitly against racism in that movie; right after the Pistols broke
up he went to Jamaica because he's loved the culture so much; he
collaborated with Afrika Bambaata ("Time Zone") in the 80s, and more,
and more. He's always talked against racism.

For him to suddenly become a racist monster seems pretty far fetched...
