Oh boy, seen 2 great passes this evening ... firstly an almost overhead 3 minute pass at 70 degrees across from W to E from 17:42 hrs ... then one to the south (max 22 degrees above horizon) for about a minute at 19:17 ... with this pass, the ISS appeared so so bright at first as the 250 long solar panels reflected huge amounts of sunlight then ever so rapidly it dimmed immensely and disappeared from view almost due south ... the earlier pass was fantastic with the ISS in view for ages, even as it dropped towards the eastern horizon, it was still so very bright ... here are the precise timings for London over next few days :

SATELLITE LOCAL DURATION MAX ELEV APPROACH DEPARTURE
DATE/TIME (MIN) (DEG) (DEG-DIR) (DEG-DIR)

ISS Sat Feb 09/06:15 PM 3 86 34 above W 23 above E
ISS Sun Feb 10/06:36 PM 2 74 33 above W 37 above ESE
ISS Mon Feb 11/06:56 PM 1 44 29 above WSW 41 above S
ISS Tue Feb 12/05:42 PM 3 77 44 above W 11 above ESE
ISS Tue Feb 12/07:17 PM 1 23 19 above WSW 23 above SSW
ISS Wed Feb 13/06:03 PM 3 47 37 above WSW 10 above SE
ISS Wed Feb 13/07:37 PM 1 11 10 above WSW 11 above SW
ISS Thu Feb 14/06:24 PM 3 25 24 above SW 11 above SSE
ISS Fri Feb 15/06:44 PM 2 12 12 above SW 10 above SSW
ISS Sun Feb 17/05:50 PM 1 14 14 above SW 10 above S

Tomorrow night's pass at approx 18:03 is probably the best remaining chance before Atlantis detaches from ISS ... at 40+ degrees max above horizon ... again from WSW to SE (basically looking to the south and across from West to East) ... visible for a full 3 minutes ... it really stands out ... it should be below the crescent moon ... the planet Mars is still up there too looking a bit orangey ... hopefully another clear evening sky in the UK ... a good excuse to leave work early and get back home ...

Bleak are the hearts in summer, long wintertme
We are god children running, immortal child
Out on the chill horizon, shine morning stars
Configurations I'll remember herald one season always

Doh, doh, doh ... managed to check the above link for Stevenage (the info would have related to any place in the London or South East region) and get the 9th & 10th Feb mixed up, hence stuck my head up out there just after 18:30 GMT hoping to see a 2 minutes duration pass at 18:36 from west to east (max elevation 85 degrees) of the International Space Station with Shuttle Atlantis attached ... indeed it occurred earlier at 18:15 & I've seen emails from folks who've seen it !!!

In the UK it is a crystal clear night tonight so it's a bit of a shame I managed to cock it all up, I was putting the shopping away !!! Anyway, there are further opportunities but tonight's was the best by far ... if anyone's able to view tomorrow, approx 18:36 is the time then 17:52 on Tuesday, other days the elevation is probably too low ... at least the URL will come in handy for any future attempts at viewing ... from your resident scribe with his head always looking upwards ...

Regards, Antoni
