[kj] OT : ISS & ... End Day

Nah, far too foggy around here :o) hence ended up later catching a run of the BBC (2005) produced End Day < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_Day > on one of the other channels ... National Geographic methinks ... happy viewing or what !!! Read my (apoca)lypse ... this was about as Killing Joke as it gets ... 5 themes ... 5 well touted doomsday scenario endings in a 60 minute docu-drama ... one of which involves that infamous particle accelerator at CERN near Geneva ... I believe someone briefly touched on CERN in a thread last November ... now there's a thought, Geneva eh, how ironic was all that, of all the places for the big black bird to leave this mortal coil ... I wonder whether Jaz has anything to say about the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN ... which is due to start it's operation in May 2008 ... "Concerns have been raised that performing collisions at previously unexplored energies might unleash new and disastrous phenomena" ... I don't really like the sound of that ... I guess it probably helps one's own understanding of such matters (ho ho) to have a brother with a phd in quantum physics ... anyway, all 4 recent remasters have now arrived ... plenty of stuff to keep us all occupied through the cold winter nights ... at least until May when it all kicks off !!! LOL

Shit man, I was just about to pretend that I was actually a keen trainspotter & that you'd really upset me as it was the love of my life, etc. Then I read the third line - spot on!

Really glad that Jamie & yourself got a good view ooop norf this evening, would be nice to see a pass where the shuttle is detached from the ISS and you get two brights objects < ISS being the brighter > following each other in close formation ... unfortunately it was a bit of a "pea souper" for us in Hertfordshire tonight, so much that you could barely see the moon through the murk ... but yesterday just before the evening's festivities I decided to pop into the Early Learning Centre and bought the Space Shuttle & booster rocket/s plus transporter for a mere 12.50 GBP though Henry managed to yank off one of the payload doors within a couple of hours ... well, it did say 3 to 8 years so it serves me right ... doh ... the ISS continues to grow and will hopefully continue to fascinate many, especially being such a bright and reliable "naked eye" object to view on a clear night ... half the problem with astronomy seems to be a struggle to see anything that exciting through light polluted urban skies and without a seriously powerful telescope ... I suspect the NASA website may also be getting a few hits from this household over the coming months too ... Regards, Antoni

We all went out and saw it.
Now my daughter Emma (4) is fascinated by it all and we are watching all the vids on the NASA web site.

Tomorrow night's pass at approx 18:03 is probably the best remaining chance before Atlantis detaches from ISS ... at 40+ degrees max above horizon ... again from WSW to SE (basically looking to the south and across from West to East) ... visible for a full 3 minutes ... it really stands out ... it should be below the crescent moon ... the planet Mars is still up there too looking a bit orangey ... hopefully another clear evening sky in the UK ... a good excuse to leave work early and get back home ...
