[kj] - Ecstasy year rat ;)

New Scientist 10 Nov 2007:

CALIFORNIA is fast becoming a smoker's nightmare. This week the town of
Belmont will ban smoking in apartment blocks and shared houses. Nearby
Oakland said last month that smokers could no longer light up at bus stops
and ATMs. Down the coast in Calabasas, smoking in public places, including
the street, has been illegal for over a year.

It's not just California. In Maine, for example, officials say that 40 per
cent of all shared residential buildings are now smoke-free. And this
January, the European Union's health commissioner Markos Kyprianou announced
that he would push member states to ban smoking in all public places in the
near future. If the trend continues, smokers may find it impossible to
indulge their habit in many cities without breaking the law.

Anti-smoking campaigners argue that the scientific evidence supporting such
measures is compelling. For example, Washington DC-based Action on Smoking
and Health (ASH), which is frequently quoted in media debates on tobacco
control, states in its promotional material that a single exposure to
tobacco fumes lasting just 30 minutes can raise a "non-smoker's risk of
suffering a fatal heart attack to that of a smoker".

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) makes similar claims, saying that just 30
minutes of exposure can affect the cells lining the coronary arteries and
"contribute to narrowing the coronary arteries and reducing blood flow to
the heart".

Can the risks of such a brief exposure really be that high? Not according to
tobacco researcher Mike Siegel of Boston University, who examined statements
made by nearly 30 anti-tobacco groups including ASH (US) and the BHF, as
well as clinical studies upon which the statements were based.

He believes the anti-tobacco groups distort the science to make their point
(Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations, DOI: 10.1186/1742-5573-4-13
<http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1742-5573-4-13> ). In doing so, he fears the
campaigners could undermine public trust in what they say, and in the
validity of powerful, legitimate evidence that links chronic passive smoking
to heart and lung disease.

Although a half-hour exposure does cause measurable changes in blood flow,
the effects are only transitory and blood circulation returns to normal
within hours, sometimes immediately, Siegel says. There is no evidence that
a single exposure causes any meaningful damage in the way that the groups
claim. "It is certainly not correct to claim that a single 30-minute
exposure to second-hand smoke causes hardening of the arteries, heart
disease, heart attacks or strokes," he says. "The anti-smoking movement has
gone overboard. The ban on streets is not scientifically justified."

"The anti-smoking movement has gone overboard, the ban on lighting up in the
streets is not scientifically justified"

Although Siegel has testified in support of other measures, such as
workplace bans, he says the US anti-smoking community has ostracised him
because of his criticism of their tactics.

Others feel that while there is no proof 30 minutes of passive smoking
raises the risk of heart attack for a non-smoker it is not unreasonable to
highlight the effect smoke has on the heart. "When you take the science and
put it in the public domain you can't include all the caveats," says Stanton
Glantz, a tobacco researcher at the University of California in San
Francisco. The messages have to be simplified so people can understand them.

Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director of the BHF agrees: "The fact
remains that brief exposure to tobacco smoke, whether active or passive, has
measurable effects on the cells lining the coronary arteries. If repeated,
exposure could contribute to narrowing the arteries and increasing the risk
of angina and heart attack."

John Banzhaf, executive director of ASH (US), says their statement was
lifted from a report by the US Centers for Disease Control, and though he
admits the risk to the heart is transitory, he does not believe you have to
spell this out explicitly. "It is such an obvious thing," he says.

I don't actually think the smoking ban thing is true. I was equally
outraged, but I've since heard that they have decided to enforce the ban in
the Parliament bar or wherever was initially exempt. Or so they tell us.

If telepathic was a misprint, what was it meant to say? Not psychopathic, I
hope.

i take it all with a pinch of salt really, its just a bit of fun and have
found that if i believe the posative things that are said about my
sign--chineese and western, then it usually happens, its all to do with the
power of posative thinking,it works for me ;)
i am still into wild exsperiences,oh yes missus, have not given them up and
im 46 in age but 36 in outlook or even 26 sometimes, suites me fine,

and DO i ever think negatively--you may ask? yes of course, usually when the
bills come in,or when the government pisses me of about yet more injustice
polocys,i have the parlament channel now,so its 24-7 deep insight unto how
bent the gov is-

-heres a good one,the new smoking ban polocy for instance, banned indoors at
work places/clubs/pubs,working vans/cars ect, this came into law last year
layed down by the govermment, well guess where they can smoke 24/7? yep in
the house of commons bar HA HA
HA HA--you have to laugh at the irony of thaT LOGIC ;D

pps the telepathic bit was a miss print btw!!!

I'd like to think all those nice things applied to me, but I think some
people, Rat or not, could say that some of it applied to them also.

And I'm certainly not telepathic! Nor into wild experiences (not anymore
anyway).

The Leo thing is also contradictory, yes I'm loyal but I certainly don't
like being centre of attention (unless I'm drunk) - I'm quite happy in the
background. Although I've had some head-turning haircuts in my youth!

I could probably pick aspects from all star signs etc that would fit me,
which is why I don't believe in it all. But then I'm a non-believer in
general - ghosts, God, Santa...
