  The demos were mid-end component stereo systems. I wanna say Yamaha....(?), 
  usual consumer gear sold in that store.

  How well controlled were the demos? I can imagine it making a difference on high end kit, but low end speakers are always gonna sound low end regardless of what you plug them into…

      I've worked in electronics stores where they sell Monster Cable and after the several 

    in-house demos i attended (con jobs themselves) I can proudly say that Monster Cable 

    does make a hell of a difference in the quality of the sound BUT just as often it won't, 

    not at all to the extent I'd pay so goddamn much for it.

      So customers would ask me with a "you're about to 'sell' me, aren't you" look on their face and i'd say, "buy a pair of Monster and a pair of regular stuff, try them at home and you be the judge if they're worth that much. I've personally done so and have not always found them to be worth it; you be the judge." 

     

      About half the people brought 'em back, noticing some slight improvement BUT NOT at all worth the price of a ripoff, and others liked how it combined with their setups and found MOnster worth the expense. So, Trial n' Error, really.

Buyer�s remorse sucks, but carpe diem I suppose. I often read online reviews
about products before I buy, I generally compare several products across a
category. It�s usually pretty easy to suss out the wheat from the chaff if

I�m not a huge audiophile, all I�ve got is a pretty decent set of THX-y

time I go into the shops all I seem to see are god-awful BIG flashy plastic
pieces of shit. Don�t care how they sound, I don�t need something that looks
like Optimus Prime in drag playing my treasured Cure collection thanks�

If I'm going to spend more than a hundred bucks on a piece of electronics, 
I'll spend a half hour or so on line looking for reviews and info to make an

informed choice.

And fwiw, Bose and well as Monster Cable are considered to be the two 
biggest overpriced and undervalue cons perpetrated on unknowing consumers in

home stereo/home theater electronics.
