[kj] the essence

Killing Joke are, indeed, fucked and have been for awhile now (except for the shining gem that is KJ2003). That's no excuse for what Tool are doing.

Heh! I love this list.

"Radio Ga-Ga" is the worst Queen single ever. This is an indisputable truth.
And has one of the worst ever videos, although Queen were especially gifted
in the shite video category. I'd almost say it's the worst UK #2 single
written by a drummer, but I'm not sure Phil Collins hasn't been there too.

(as an aside, "The Works" LP came out while I was working in the Gloucester
HMV shop, and we had it on rotation so we had to play it twice a day for a
fortnight. Other albums I still hate for this reason, along with the obvious
ones, include "Colour By Numbers", by Culture Club, "Shout At The Devil", by
Motley Crue, 1984 by Van Halen - in fact, I am convinced that my treasured
12" promo of Eighties, "Halloween" by the Dead Kennedys and The Birthday
Party's "Bad Seed" EP saved my sanity on several occasions. Was a bit
depressed when I rushed to the turntable when the "Me Or You" promo first
turned up, yelling to my co-workers that this is Killing Joke, and it's
bound to be fucking brilliant. There was, I think, an embarrassed cough from
the almost cleared shop when it finished. I wear my promotional Me Or You
t-shirt very rarely, as you would imagine. Grabbed three copies of the
double 7", though, as there were some with mispressed "labels" - some said
"Me Or You" on both sides, some had "Feast Of Blaze" on both sides).

There isn't a King Crimson album I don't love, although "Islands", with the
exception of the title track and "Song Of The Gulls", comes close with its
constant Sweep-being-tortured jazzy woodwind howling, but although the three
80s albums mean a great deal to me, they are fatally flawed because of the
lengthy instrumental tracks - they worked brilliantly live, but are
meaningless on record - sounds like pseuds fiddling with their Fairlights
and Linn Drums. "Thrak" is more consistent and experimental than anything
they released in the eighties, and as an added bonus nothing from it was
afforded a disco remix ("Sleepless", magnificent though it is, didn't need a
Kevorkian Mix).

And isn't it Killing Joke who are completely up their own asses and have
resided there for years? But we still love them. Can't summon up the
enthusiasm to defend Tool, whom I like but not ferociously.

I'll stick up for Queen anyday. I'm not too familiar with the album Jazz but
I know that Mustapha and Don't Stop Me Now are both on there so it surely
can't be ALL bad. Also gotta give it up for the rockers like Now I'm Here
and Keep Yourself Alive as well as the more poppy, schlocky fair like I Want
To Break Free and Radio Ga Ga.

King Crimson really came out with some amazing stuff in the 80s. The 70s
stuff is ok, here and there. Same with the 90s and beyond. But the 3
Belew-era albums from the 80s are really awesome.

Tool are completely up their own asses and have resided there for years.
Opiate and Undertow are both great. It's all downhill from there. Lateralus,
in particular, is such a shitty album. 10 000 Days has some decent moments.

Well, I'm not going to get all red in the face attempting to defend
Queen here. Much like their US counterparts in Kiss, I heard them
before I ever layed ears on anything even remotely punk. Queen were
DELIBERATE in their pomp-rock ridiculousness, but at least they
didn't take themselves so dreadfully seriously (i.e. those gents in
E.L.P, Yes, etc.) And, they made some absolutely fantastic music
along the way. Sure, "Bicycle Race" is vaudevillian nonsense, but
listen to "Sheer Heart Attack," "The Prophet's Song," "Fight From The
Inside," "Stone Cold Crazy" -- they wrote some great stuff.

No matter what, they're far better than Bob fucking Dylan.
