I had that same experience when I was theh Cure and Cranes in Sacramento, I thin kin 1991? A very clear sound outdoors but the kick physically moved me. I had to go about halfway back to actually enjoy the show.

They were so loud it physically pushed the air out of your lungs . . it was
a completely clean sound as well.

Us in late '88 outdoors at the LA Coliseum (from more than halfway back in
the field) and Van Halen in 1980 inside the LA Sports Arena both had
amazingly loud yet crystal clear perfectly balanced sound with an enormous
amount of bass that did exactly what you say - it literally felt like
someone was punching you in the chest.
