I think someone else raised the point, but a lot of times, it has more to do with the venue than the act. Wetlands here in NYC (since closed -- now an expensive furniture store) had its performance space in the back of a relatively tiny, concrete room -- the sound was so compressed, it was inescapably loud. Saw the Damage Manual there (among many others).
The White Stripes at Lupo's in Providence, Rhode Island two years ago was like standing in front of a jet engine.
