[kj] An Olive Branch for Olive-r

Okay....SO many things wrong with this post!

First of all, Sabbath were never hair-metal. Ever. Of course, we all love the first 4 Sabbath albums. I actually go as far as the first 6. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage are both just as good as the first 4. It all went to shit after that. And to answer a question you asked later, no, Dio-Sabbath is not hair metal. They were straight up heavy metal a la Maiden, Priest etc. Nope, not even open for debate. Moving on...

Secondly, Anthrax....hair metal? Maybe there were elements of that in Joey Belladona's vocals but Anthrax on the whole were balls-out speed/thrash metal. To say that Warrant's music is anything like Anthrax is just a flat out uninformed opinion. I think some of your "memories" might be better categorized as assumptions.

And, again, Nirvana being lumped into the whole hair metal thing. Certainly, their success and the success of their peers by proxy (not to mention the torrent of so-called "alternative" bands that followed ie: Candlebox, Stone Temple Pilots) was similiar to the popularity of 80s metal. Both movements or whatever you want to call it had the same aspirations of success and the same intentions by which to achieve it. Musically though, I don't hear it. If you want to compare bands to hair metal, look no further than My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Avenged Sevenfold etc etc. Right there, that's your fake-ass punk/hardcore/metal. Those guys are up onstage with their shirts off, puffing their breasts out and saying shit like "Let me hear you SCREEEAAM!!!!" in between songs.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything either. To me, this is all in good fun and not in any way mean-spirited. Just, you know.....Anthrax....hair metal?

Kurt Cobain said he wanted Nirvana to sound like The Beatles meets Black
Sabbath. Are Black Sabbath hair metal? Well, debatable -- maybe later
era Black Sabbath were hair metal, sure. I personally don't think
Nirvana sounded like hair metal per se, but when Nirvana broke into
popular consciousness, they sounded more like the next step up-and-away
from the hair metal of Warrant, Anthrax (the metal band, not the punk
one) that had dominated the Headbangers' Ball landscape of the 80s, not
a return to, or new kind of, punk, as some many music writers insisted.
It was esepcially surreal in the days of '92 - '93 to hear the same DJs
that only a couple of years before had been playing New Kids on the
Block or Bell Biv Devoe to suddenly be playing Nirvana and Firehose and
talking abou punk like they'd been into it all along. Sorry! Some of us
have memories.

In any event, whether they sound like hair metal or not, I just have
never liked Nirvana.

Also: I WISH KILLING JOKE HAD WON THAT LAWSUIT! :) (I do like Grohl's
drumming on 2003 s/t but that is probably the nicest thing I'll say
about anyone in Nirvana.)
