[kj] inside exremities and no way out(2006)

Hey now, in my own defense, I have often mentioned here that I bought,
for ex., the double blue vinyl 12"x2 ltd. ed. LP of _Hosannas_,
Nighttime on vinyl, have bought KJ t-shirt merch., etc. I think KJ
deserve the money. But I'm not against peer-to-peer unauthorized file
sharing on principle.

In a recent recent interview w/ Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi) he was
asked about file sharking systems like Soulseek. He claimed it was
wonderful. He mentioned that when he was in his late teens and twenties
in the 1980s, one of the biggest frustrations hardcore punk and other
underground acts had was actually getting people to hear their music.
Most stations wouldn't play it, MTV hated it, etc. -- even though now
all these same folks act like they were always on the bandwagon all
along. He said something like Soulseek back then would have been a
godsend to bands like his and his friends in Negative Approach and the
Dead Kennedys, because then they'd have a wider audience for their
message and movement. He said the entire reason they played was so that
-- dun dun dun -- folks could hear their music.

I think that the downloading of music via stuff like Soulseek is not
necessarily connected to lack of album sales in the same way the RIAA
would like folks to think it is. A lot of bands' income is from merch:
posters, live show ticket sales, paying at the door, t-shirts, stickers
-- stuff that's hard if not impossible to download. MP3s are one one
component of this oeuvre of output. Majors even seed or leak mp3s on
audio blogs to create buzz for bands.
