I think CV focus on bands that have perhaps had their heyday but still have a hardcore following. Rather like Sanctuary records (who were also in line to sign the band). I think it's more of a licensing thing where the band more or less covers the recording costs but the label does the distribution etc but probably give a more generous royalty.

But unless you're Green Day or some band like that, how much advertising is going to work for you? I would have thought that Killing Joke don't have fair weather fans. I'm sure that they depend on the hard core and devout, and with modern technology being what it is, we all get to hear about upcoming releases via forums, websites, myspace etc. Therefore why spend a huge amount on blanket advertising.

Things like the Kerrang awards etc are worth far more than adverts (and they're free!!). Have a good relationship with a magazine, and that must surely help.

Now that we are on the Cooking Vinyl question I wonder if there was any
promotion in the US. I am not familiar enough with them as a business to
know where they would normally advertise but I have not seen a thing. And
from looking at their catalog they almost seem like a modern day Cleopatra
records ala 1996 (when they would reissue ANYTHING punk, goth, etc.) and put
nothing into their working bands.
