I agree. Since mp3s, I now listen to music more than ever before.
Probably even more than I did when I was a sulky teenager hidden away in
my bedroom. Personally, it's totally changed the way I listen to music.
3 years ago I probably managed about an hour a week, tied to the
armchair by headphones.

Now I have everything on my laptop and spend most of my working day
listening to it. I have 20GB on my mp3 player which I can then listen
to walking to and from work, sitting in the garden, cooking, cleaning,
whatever. Oftentimes, after a few drinks at home, my other half will
fall asleep and I'll listen to music. Gone are the days of getting up
on Sunday mornings to find piles of CDs all over the floor...

As for the people who can't name 500 songs, my boss is one of them. But
in fairness, he's just got into mp3s and says he's really re-discovering
music. Listening to all his old favourites from his youth, and really
enjoying it for the first time in years. (OK, it could be a mid-life
crisis.) That's a good thing.

I do buy CDs, and love the artwork. But it's never been the same as
pawing over the artwork on vinyl - that I miss. But as I'm importing
everything into iTunes, ready for my iPod purchase, I'm adding as much
artwork as I can find. Even images of vinyl labels from favourite
albums/singles.

I've also saved a ton of money. I download things from Soulseek (hang
on, let me finish!) and if I like it I buy it. If I don't, I delete it.
I've wasted so much money over the years on music I thought I'd buy
after reading a review only to find that it's bloody awful.

One more thing is that if it wasn't for downloading, I wouldn't have got
into Killing Joke.

Cheers,

Janean

i recall similar conversations when CDs arrived spelling the ultimate
demise (on a grande scale) of vinyl.

What i do know is that my life is so full on that i couldnt really get
to listen to it much, but the ipod allowed me to change that and start
to enjoy what i was missing. And boy do i enjoy it. I cant argue with
Leigh as its statistically unproven and just his expression and whom i
to say hes wrong, but i will say that i have the cormorents egg in its
box tied up and I show it to everyone - who seem confused at first - and
while at first they are bemused they eventually seem to utter a single
word..."coool"

Now thats presenting music in a new format and while it cant be mass
produced it still is embracing modern technology in a different way. So
i dont give a flying f*ck whether the 'masses' cant name 500 songs as
its irrelevant. I use the technology for my own purposes and that alone
justifies it. I put the i in front of the Pat as a piss take on my
somewhat misunderstood addicition to mac technolgy.

Will i download movies - no i dont think so but i may, however if there
is a video function that allows me to utilise my time on what i think is
special it doesnt really matter if no one else can agree. It works for
me. Full Stop! ; )

good thread...for me
