[kj] reasons why BTATS is gash

I agree, it got me into the joke and to listen to all those different styles blew me away. For the life of me though I will never understand why Frenzy, or any song, from Fire Dances wasn't on there.

I didn't get into it until a friend gave me his copy of "Laugh I nearly brought one" to me. It wasn't his cup of tea, but I loved it. I was amazed that this was all one band who did all this different music. So I guess from the onset I had the mindframe of never knowing what to expect.

By the time I found outside the gate I was steeled to expect the worst. I guess I went into that album with the attitude of just try to find something I like. So I like my love of this land and that's that.

As far as BTATS go I have always liked that album. I usually skip adorations, and then skip the deadly triple threat of masses, southern sky, and victory, but the rest of the album suits me just fine. I always have had soft spots for chessboards, twilight of the mortal, and yes, goodbye to the village.

From,
Will

I didn't get into the `Joke until "Eighties" (and went backwards from there, discovering their harder stuff), but didn't see a huge discrepancy in style -- just a broadening of scope. When I first heard the "Adorations" single, though, I was aghast. It sounded like a totally different band, but I grew to appreciate it. I don't think I was actively dissapointed or let down by the band until hearing "America" for the first time.

i think if i'd been a joker since day one i'd have been disappointed with it (and the tour would have been a total let-down), but since i didn't get into them until '88 (of all years) that wasn't the case. the main problem seems to be that's when jaz started taking over. it's the only album the remixes of which i actually prefer. as with jamie potanga, it also has to power to take me back in time emotionally. you're too harsh on 'rubicon'. can't fault 'chessboards' at all. both singles yielded at least one excellent remix. 'victory' i still like, though i see where you're coming from. the only one i really just can't abide is 'exile'. ('a southern sky' i have blanked out of my mind completely, so that doesn't count.) the gatefold inner of the 'adorations' 7" double-pack surely has to be their nadir in terms of commercialisation?
