You are right that the lyrics aren't up to much - but frankly Jaz's lyrics have been on a terminal decline since he abandoned the "less is more" approach... i.e. from Revelations onwards. (Lyrics on Revelations and Fire Dances are ok, but not as good as 79-81.)
What *makes* Night Time is Geordie's guitar. From late '83 onwards (till the sadly under-mixed BTATS) you can hear the full beauty of "a thousand orchestras playing at once".
Right, I'm off to listen to it now.

>But for me what makes it inferior to their previous albums is that they watered themselves down in order to appeal to a wider audience. Compared to the first three it is very, very commercial sounding. It's a bit on the samey/bland side (similar keyboard style in many songs, similar drums, boring bass) The lyrics fluctuate between the ineffective ("Night-time, turning out the sun" - sounds like a nursery rhyme) and the overblown and grandiose (e.g. 'Europe'). Not saying it's bad, just flawed. Their best album? Sorry, na-uh.
