He was certainly blessed with an unusually resonant baritone voice.

When THE DOORS CONCERTO came out there was a little clip on the website of
Ray Manzarek saying "Jim would have dug it", and I remember thinking at the
time "hmm... not sure about that - he'd have probably seen straight through
it!"
