[kj] You feel old when...

I didn't mind TTs sound too much, but Exene Cervenca (Original Sinners) was a bit loud a few months back...
As for clubs, the Rat was truly a treasure, Middle East downstairs is so-so (upstairs I haven't been to recently), but the huge disappointment is Axis--Stiff Little Fingers and Buzzcocks sounded awful, despite the great music. Avalon is good for bigger shows. Take care,
Greg

  greg,

didn't know curt was playing at T.T.s last night. I must confess I saw them a handful of times back in the day and didn't think too much of them. I liked them a lot better on record.
They always played well I thought, but their live sound was always a mess to me. they had the same guy doing sound for them for a long time (some SST croney no doubt) and I always thought his sound was pretty bad. It was fun to do sound for bands that were opening for them because it was pretty easy to sound as good or better than them, even without a sound check.
Just for the record, didn't one of those guys o.d. a few years back? As always, an incredible waste of talent.
As far as T.T.'s goes, that place has been doing shows for 20 years now, and they still haven't made a concerted effort to make that place sound any better. When the place first opened in 86, they had a drop ceiling and a carpet on the back wall of the stage. the sound equipment was lousy, but at least the acoustics were relatively manageable. At some point they took the carpet off and painted the back of the stage wall which definitely looks way better but sounds a lot worse. Then they took out the drop ceiling and now it's loud as f---.
The sound equipment is much improved, but the sound of the room without the pa even being loud is so much louder that it pretty much negates all the improvements.
It's not much different than the Middle East Club next door. the upstairs room is stupid loud and no one cares enough to make it better. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE loud music,
but it has to be GOOD loud. For Boston, the best club sound system had to have been the RAT up until about 1986 or so. They had a killer pa in there that hit you right in the chest, guitars sounded great without a lot of effort, and ultimately, it was loud and usually CLEAR.
Easily the loudest show I ever saw there was the swans in early 87 (I think.) They had 2 drummers at the time. The show was so ridiculously loud, but at the same time, the sound was clear as a bell. While I wasn't a die hard fan like some others, the experience was truly impressive.
                                                                         Thanks, Carl P.
