Actually, Billy Zoom usually grins quite a bit, and in Boston a few weeks ago, he shook hands and photographed the audience after the show--all smiles. (I guess it come w/old age).

in my experience of the audiences i have played for, only about 30% do i feel the need to acknowledge or continue communicating with, normally you can tell in about three songs if the particular audience is even worth pissing on. but then that 30% can make it all seem like heaven. when it all goes right, and the spontaneity flows, it can rival really good freaky sex with multiple partners.
sometimes it is just a gig - who is to blame billy zoom and geordie for appearing smug or aloof. often people in groups can be insipid unconscious bags of fungus. so even if the audience are footing your gas and rock star bill, at times it can be difficult to have concern for their perception.

both geordie and zoom never seem to stray from their stoic demeanor, which may work better than some forced histrionic display of enthusiasm ( gary cherone anyone?! ) night in and night out. whatever is their reason, be it just style, concentration on their craft, shyness/insecurity or down right contempt for the audiences,
it works for this audience member.

To be fair and clear, I wasn't being entirely serious. Geordie -- as we've talked about many times before -- is usually too cool for school to display any discernible emotion whilst playing (much like, say, Billy Zoom in X), although the booklet for the first album re-release does boast and early picture of him in full-on white man's overbite in the midst of rocking. Generally speaking, though, he usually looks aloof and somewhat miffed.

But, y'know, at the end of the day....he's Geordie, we're not. We must bow down.

I read in a 2003 interview, however, that Geordie was the one who asked Jaz to "come do Killing Joke" again, so maybe looks are deceiving!

Raven at least looks like he enjoys himself. So does Ben, for that matter. To
look at Geordie, you'd think he'd rather be elsewhere, doing his taxes or having
a root canal or having a colonoscopy.
