[kj] Re: Gathering Digest, Vol 32, Issue 50 French interview

Marcel spooman at freenet.de

I hope I'm doing this right; I've never posted anything here...

This is the last paragraph of the french interview. The translation all but perfect, but I'm quite sure I haven't altered the meaning. You may think this is out of context, but it isn't - it came out of the blue as an answer to a question about KJ playing festivals. ;-)

Let me tell you something: You see KJ as a band. I don't. I see KJ as an idea, a dream. KJ can be a book, a movie. KJ can be whatever support you like. I don't restrict myself and I never allow the stereotypes of Rock'n'Roll to dictate myself. [or control myself] Thaht's why I like/love working with orchestras, I like new challenges. I like doing lectures, I like doing stuff I never have done before. I like being afraid. I like to tell myself: "Why, Jaz? Why did you accept that? Now you have to do it." I like throwing myself into the fire.
Once I'm in cycle of fire and I break out of it, I realize it was all peanuts [meaning ridiculous, meaningless]. Everybody can achieve what they want to. Everybody has that power. God has given a gift to everybody. For me that gift is more far off, as I have a long nose. (laughs) [don't know if that's meant literally or if it's a french saying] I sense/suspect the fact [sic] of having a ower/talent that is not limited to music. There is something else and I have to survive this demented life to find out about it/know it. I have to sleep with an alarm device that monitors my heartbeat, as I have a problem with that. But there is always a problem.
You have to observe the people. You have to be suspicious and paranoid. Paranoia and exhaustion are your best friends. (his wife [sic] Brenda giggles) Yeah, because you know nothing about creativity, young lady. Paranoia is... well look at Salvadore Dali. The paranoid, critical method. He picked [stole] that from Yves Tanguy. Does anybody know him here? They also call him Papa Tanguy. That's how Salvadore Dali called him. Tanguy lived in Carnac. He dreamt of methods like sleeping while being awake. How do you sleep when you're awake? Naturally the french know how to do that, because they drink a lot during their good meals and they've learned to stay awake while they're fast asleep. This gives them visions.
Tanguy to me is the only one, the unique. There are always those who stand in the shade of better ones. Not Tanguy, not Dali and not Victor Safonkin. Tanguy has learnt to sleep awake while continuating his conversation and while painting. He then put a number representative of that energy. [sic, probably: He then gave the energy a representative number] It's him who initiated that. I'm going to finish the interview by giving a toast to Yves Tanguy but also to Tanguy who works for our french record company; he does a lot for us. Double trouble (laughs) Cheers! The interview is over (laughs).

The interviewer thanks Jaz for doing the interview after the gig around 3:00 in the morning, his wife [?] for her patience and the guy from the record company for arranging it all.

P.S.: By "20 livres par jour" Jaz does not mean 20 books per day, but GBP. :-)

>(Rires).

The bottom line is, I love playing with this guy. He's a fantastic guitarist. He's like a wall of four guitars all by himself. For me, working with Geordie Walker is a privilege. Benny our drummer... Young people keep on getting better. You don't need old people. It's the same with the bass. You need more energy and precision. Musical standards must be kept at a high level. KJ is like a way of life. The image isn't important. The celebration is all that matters. That's it. As long as Geordie keeps wanting to do it, KJ will continue to exist. We'll keep making music and each album will be better [sic]. We try always to improve and to surpass ourselves."
