No, it's not the answer, really. For a start, the Japanese use three different alphabets or writing systems, none of which correspond to the western letter system. Furthermore, desciphering the precise meaning of the word is dependent upon comprehending every single aspect of the symbol, including context and location within the sentence. It is simply impossible to take a shortcut such as reading the first and last letters. Learning to read and write Japanese is a mammoth task; it takes considerably longer to master than the comparatively easy English language. The Japanese read their language incredibly fast simply through years and years of practice and necessity.
