any idea how Geordie came by this set up? particularly the whole tone
downtuning on Firedances etc?

>>>>>>> It just sounds "Heavier", for one thing. Billy Gibbons goes down two whole steps (To C) and even beyond on "Rhythmeen" I think. Also, it might have suited Jaz, from a vocal point of view.

Beyond that, maybe his guitar neck couldn't take the regular tuning anymore (the higher the string tension, the more the neck wants to do an impression of a fishing rod in reverse!) Some acoustic guitars in particular (like 12 strings!) do object to normal pitch and have to be tuned to "D" or even down lower. Else they are liable to break!!!

Incidentally, drop D and total detuning are the norm now in some genres. It just makes everything soumd deeper. The kids love it!!
