/---That's the same with every influential band though, from Faith No
More to the Smiths. When was the last time you heard a song from Papa
Roach or Oasis that sounded like either of those two (in terms of music
or quality, actually ;)?/

*yeah that is true particularly of modern bands, but kj influences like
- adam and the ants, chic, kraftwerk, glitter etc are there -
as are blues/folk in zepplin or carl perkins/gene vincent/eddie cochran
in the beatles. yet after learning and a practicing a vocabulary based
on their musical influences these bands developed their own language as
talented creative musicians will.

it is more common for modern "musicians" to not take
time to learn the musical approach an influence had, and instead take
influence from the shear momentum of being in a group and aspire to
emulate the media/cultural success of a previous artist. in turn their
music bears no vocabulary beyond some rudiment garnered from their
limited perspective, i.e. oasis

not that less modern artists hadn't emulated an influence merely from a
aesthetic business approach before, ex: presley f/ sinatra, prince f/
richard pettiman etc. but the non musical influence approach does seem
more and more the approach taken.
