While there are certainly differences between them, "Thrash Metal" and "Death Metal," are still both subsets of Heavy Metal, thus they are *SUB*-genres, not full genres. Peter may have been simply being pedantic, but he was still right.....in this fleeting, isolated case.

So prog rock and goth rock and indie rock aren't very different either?
Sorry but your "logic" fails, thrash has a whole lot of punk influence
that death metal never or barely ever has (not counting latter day Napalm
Death, since all they do is ruin good old songs anyway).
