It does look like a woman doesn't it . . although the explanation that Da
Vinci liked his boys pretty seems to be quite convincing as well . . 

I would've thought that Da Vinci, painting in the middle ages, would've held
true to the church line at the time and treated Mary as little more than a
hanger on (Jesus groupie) 

I watched an interesting program a while ago looking into Mary and her
actions in the time following JC's death and there seems to be quite a bit
of evidence that she pretty much lead the fledgling Christians for quite a
time.
