[kj] Nazi pontiffs...fuck off!

Most catholics I know take their religion with a pinch of salt and
symbolically, not at all literally. They are quite a lot more open
minded than – say – the happy clappy fundamentalists. Now those people
are the scariest. I had a flirtation with them – oooh – years ago. They
seemed so happy – but when I penetrated the exterior I found that they
are very narrow minded. For god sake - they think that doing yoga opens
you to evil spirits and won’t let their kids read Harry Potter because
it refers to witch craft. 
 
The catholics I know all seem to spend a lot of time partying and
getting pissed. How could you take anything the pope says literally when
they have changed their minds about so many details of worship over the
years.
 
I am indeed a lapsed catholic myself – having been to convent school
from 11yrs old. We weren’t churchgoers. I am sure it did have some sort
of influence on me, although quite a vague one. I know about as much
about the pope, etc. as anyone. I certainly was not indoctrinated.

I don‘t think one can judge what the pope did when he was a child or
youth. His real motives for desertion from Wehrmacht and so on. 
I think more important is what he stands for now and from this angle he
is to continue very conservative line of his precedor …. And his
precedor made sure that the conservative pope will be elected after his
death by appointing quite big numer of new cardinals – all of them
representing conservative trend within Catholic church.
John Paul II have stopped and reversed all liberalising trends in
Catholic church that started in 1960s and new pope is gong to continue
this direction. So what we can expect from him is further homophobia,
anti-women stuff, anti-abortion and anti-contraception crusade. This is
enough to see that new pope is a bastard, pope of reaction, conservative
right-wing within already very conservative Catholic church.
Whether he was member of Hitler-jugend with enthusiasm or with disgust
or deserted Wehrmacht because of approaching deafeat of Nazi Germany or
because disagreement with the Nazi government is hard to say. But his
current policie and positions are more than enough to be fully against
him.

He also later joined the Wehrmacht. He deserted before the end of the
war. Not that you can read anything into his desertion; many loyal Nazis
deserted when they saw what was coming.
