I know so little about Coil other than their connection (via Peter
"Sleazy" Christopherson) to Throbbing Gristle. I picked up SCATOLOGY a
number of years back for their rather ploddingly harrowing cover of
"Tainted Love". Been reading lots about both bands (TG and Coil) lately
and am strangely intrigued by the inherent WRONGNESS of both bands'
musical output. I can't say I really "enjoy" Throbbing Gristle's music,
but there is an abject ugliness to it that makes it both repulsive and
compelling. Coil's a bit more musical, but their predilection for the
horrific and grotesque makes Cradle of Filth seem as scary as Ace of
Base. After reading several accounts of how the album HORSE ROTORVATOR
is one of the scariest records of all time, I finally tracked down a
copy. Unsettling, yes, but I was hoping to be more scarred. I frankly
find "The Sewage Worker's Birthday Party" (and its accompanying
narrative) on SCATOLOGY to be their scariest moment, but I'm still just
sinking into HORSE ROTORVATOR, so it might be too early to tell.

I gather their more recent stuff (prior to the untimely and bizarre
death of John Balance) is more ambient, no?
