Worldwide misery was there long before capitalism, and will probably be there long after it.  Most "-isms" (at least the ones that have made it into government) have been responsible for lots of misery: communism, fascism, capitalism, etc. So have most (all?) of the major religions.

Why? Probably because they involve humans in charge of other humans, and that's frequently a recipe for misery...
