Pretty much Alex.

I have to be in the minority that think Pop is good (& Passengers). The
album after that has one or two tracks on it ('New York' mainly) & the
new one is just as disappointing - one or two tracks yet again.

'Blood on your hands' though.. IMO a bad example - sub-extremities &
slightly token/contrived.

 I'd say a good nine-tenths of U2's fans (self included) continue to follow
them based on their love for the band's *significantly older* material. I
mean, there may have been a smattering of okay-to-decent tracks on their
last couple of albums (even if you're a fan), but I can't imagine anyone
hearing "Vertigo" for the fist time and thinking: "AT LAST, THE BAND I'VE
BEEN SEARCHING FOR ALL MY LIFE!"

My point, once again, is that U2 stopped making their best music years ago.

By contrast, I consider "Blood on Your Hands" off the most recent Killing
Joke to be among the best work they've ever done -- translation: THEY'VE
STILL GOT IT.

I could think of at least 10 other bands who deserve even half of what U2
get.

The Chameleons. 'Strange Times' just never *happened* for them - it's my
favourite, so inevitably I'm biased ;)

I was only wondering the other day, what *is* it that makes a band
successful?? Mass appeal? Lowest Common Denominator music? But fashions
change & there has to be a core following, so there must be some *real*
appeal in there somewhere. Maybe.
