Hello,
Kind of felt I had to join in on this one as the token Irish
representative on The Gathering (sorry 2nd one. Was forgetting about
yerself PREAst).
U2 in my opinion are so over rated it's not funny anymore. Having more
or less grown up with them, seeing them first in the Dandelion Market in
possibly 79/80, when they still had some sort punk roots along with the
Virgin Prunes, who in my opinion deserved more recognition then they
ever got, U2 just bore me for many reasons, not just their music.
The Edge is just an average guitar player and Clayton can't play the
bass for shit, Bono and his alter ego both on and off stage, his off
stage antics just annoy me more and more, basically because it's so
hypocritical of him. Larry is Larry and the only one who has not let the
fame go to his head, in fact he is the only one to live on the same side
of the city they grew up on, the others moving to the affluent
Killiney/Dalkey area to live with the rest of the rich and famous that
haunt that area (not that I would include myself, but I too live within
spitting distance of Mr. Hewson or Bobo as his Mrs. Calls him).
They are not a band anymore and have not been for years, maybe since
McGuiness took over as manager anyway, they are a pure business, in fact
they are a registered business here, calling themselves The 4 of us,
buying up property around the city, sometimes doing them up to sell on
or hotels in which they entertain their own in. They also set up a
record label, called Mother Records, which around Dublin became known as
Smother records, because of the way the bands signed up would just fade
into insignificance once signed. U2 have always played the corporate
game and no surprise to see them align themselves with iMac/Pod only
time before they do a Windows tour or something.
To some if not all of you this may sound like begrudgery or sour grapes,
as they done better than me and were in most cases I would agree with
people who would say that, in this case, no, I can't agree, as I have
seen at close quarters many times what sort of people they are, they are
greedy, selfish, rude and opinionated hypocrites, especially Bono Vox.
I will give you one example of this, recent elections have come and gone
across the globe for all the different things we are supposed to vote
for, the American elections this time more than any was an election that
people were being told vote vote vote! It'll make a difference, vote!
Our own Bono was even part of this rock the vote thing and made a lot of
noise to get people out, but when it came to an election here (change to
constitution on legality of refugees and citizenship of same, as well as
local elections for TDs and councillors), Bono thought it more
productive to stay on the piss in one of his hotels in town, in so doing
missed his chance to make a difference and at the same time he was also
seen to be fragrantly breaking the law by smoking in the bar of same
hotel! (I know this has been law in US or some states anyway for a bit,
but Ireland decided on out right ban on smoking in bars and hotels, UK
looks like doing same soon ...have fun in the cold guys hehehe)
Not the first time the man has been caught out, nor is it any different
for the others, Clayton having been arrested for possession of all be it
soft drugs in a local pub car park, was given a IR£2,500 fine to be paid
to the well woman centre, same day two mates of mine were up on similar
charges and even though they got caught with less, they both did 6
months time. The judges reasoning on the glaring inconsistency was, Mr.
Clayton, if given a sentence would have lost more, as he would have not
have been bale to go to America with drugs offences to his name! So
fucking what! Ok, so the judges fault, not Adam's, but this was not
first time this happened nor was it last.
I could go on and possibly have, but it just pisses me off every time
they bring out a new album, the publicity circus that goes on around
them is pitiful, as again in my opinion they just happened to be around
at the right time and possibly been in the right place to get the notice
they did, when at the time bands like Simple Minds, just couldn't keep
up, so thankful for small mercies I guess, but I could think of at least
10 other bands who deserve even half of what U2 get.
Reading back over what I have just written, I guess a lot of this is
down to the personalities in the band and not just their music, but
don't get me wrong, I detest the music too! I make it a point not to
listen to local radio stations while the hype of the new album is going
on, although I could not help but laugh when hearing the story of the
Edge loosing the only disc that was to be new album, like as if...
Come on what sort of idiots do they take people for, multi million pound
super group and they only have one CD of their new album! Bollocks to
that, more hype, more spin and more shit!
If for nothing else that is something Killing Joke can't be accused of,
not keeping it real, just a pity they could not keep it together to get
that notice it takes to move on from just having cult status. Cult
status don't put food on the table though I guess and time has marched
on, so I guess not much hope of seeing Killing Joke fill knobworth or
knebworth or whatever that place is called.
As for Bono's Irish accent, someone has said it I think, but yeah he is
Irish so he can't help that, but I have heard him on occasion, when he
is drunk sound for all the world like an english lord of the manor, with
the stereotypical attitude to go with it, and that accent don't go down
to well round these parts hahaha

Look at that, say fuckall for months, forget about people on the list I
have stuff for and then sit down for 5 minutes and all this comes out, I
was going to delete it and not bother, but to be honest for long enough
now I lurked and bit my tongue, I might even join in now I have gotten
this off me chest hahaha

But i was nt saying that people from poorer backgrounds,Are in anyway
necessarily better than people from more affluent backgrounds.But people
should be the way they are.And not act in a certain way to get
credabitility or sympathy.
    Some of the new young British bands are starting to sing with
American accents,I suppose in order to "Break America".
