Any clampdown like this is a miscalculation of a kind that only a
major label, or wannabe, or collaborator (think Vichy) would come up
with.  The band have never struck me as control addicts.  If they
were, they certainly would not yield the level of control to record
labels that they have over the years.

If someone wants to clear the way for commercial releases along the
general lines of the Led Zeppelin live CD and DVD sets that came out
not too long ago, that's another matter. The bootleg hardcore are a
totally different beast from the folks who would dip into the
remastered back-catalog for the first time.  You would think a record
company would have a grip on the type of viral marketing where the
enthusiasm of the hardcore generates new fans.  But the majors, for
sure, seem to object to that idea on the principle that it doesn't
develop on their terms.  Loosen the clamp, I say.

Don't forget this is all good news *if* the band are willing to
exercise this new position - official
dvds, live releases (maybe 'Ha!'), ad infinitum.
