OK, here are the secrets....shhhh

free software TMPGEnc is the first thhing I used to split the audio from the
video

Then, Cool edit 2000 audio software to mess about with the audio quality
(not sure of the web site but when you find it, you can download a
functional version - I can give you registration details to make it fully
functional if you want)

Then, combine the audio and video using TMPGEnc again into an mpeg1 file

Finally (bit rates willing - or even ignoring the previous steps) use
windows media encoder which is freely available from Microsoft's web site to
convert the video file to wmv format (the best format I have found for
compressing video - despite the winges from mac users).

Another thing of use is the Huffy codec to make the video files smaller.
