Well, it was even more convoluted than that. After months and months of
*PURPOSELY* blurring the lines between Iraq and Al Qaeda (and there was some
horrifying statistic that the Average American doesn't know the difference
between the two elements anyway), Bush came out yesterday and said there was
no evidence to suggest that Saddam had anything to do with the attacks of
September 11, 2001, but that he "definetely has ties to Al Qaeda".
Now, riddle me this Batman, how does one not having anything to do with
September 11th yet still maintain ties with the criminal element
responsible?
Personally speaking, I'm not convinced Iraq has anything to do with Al Qaeda
(there's a fundamental problem of idealogy that separates the two. Bin Laden
and Al Zawahiri consider the Baathist party "socialists" and would
invariably consider Saddam a "bad Muslim." Thus, Al Qaeda were perfectly
chuffed to see Saddam tossed out of power ---- not just because they don't
like the guy, but because it opens up a wealth of opportunity for
recruitment and incurring sympathy with the rest of the region.
What I hate to suggest -- though I believe it's true -- is that the Bush
Administration is banking on low-brow, deep-seated American jingoism and
ignorance in order to further their own agenda in Iraq. America may style
itself as a cultural melting pot wherein disparate ethnicities, creeds and
faiths all live harmoniously, but you try talking to someone in Georgia
about Islam and see what ya get. (Apologies to any Georgian Gatherers here
who might take offense to this snobby New Yorker's opinion).
Bottom line: President Bill Clinton had a game plan in place for dealing
with terrorism when he handed over the reigns of command to the Bush
Administration, who promptly ignored it....possibly thinking that a
terrorist incident like 9/11 would allow them to change the game board.
Which it has.
