Mistakes aside (they did NOT play Empire Song), this is a very positive review.

KILLING JOKE, HEADKASE | ARENA | 20.11.03
Some may think local metal act Headkase are an unlikely choice to support industrial act Killing Joke tonight, but those doubts are put to rest early as the six-piece slam out a fiery and energised set. Their unique fusion of metal and soft-core techno beats gets a nod from even the most cynical industrial enthusiast.
They open crowd favourite ‘Murdered And Dumped In The Willow’, usually their closing track. That’s followed by ‘Where The Blood May Lead’ and an older song ‘Alluette And The Lava Lamp’ which is more techno-inspired and features a solo by face-painted drummer Todd. They have a small crowd of loyalists head-banging up the front, and seem suitably stoked to be playing such a large venue, with a well-respected band. Stage theatrics and guttural growls are provided by vocalist Nutty who provides a lot of the band’s stage presence.
Then comes the awful rap music between the two bands – it’s highly inappropriate and definitely lessens the vibe of the evening. But this is instantly forgotten when industrial metal pioneers Killing Joke take to the stage and the smaller (and older) than usual crowd let out an almighty roar.
Frontman, Jaz Coleman is decked out in a black, hooded poncho sporting a white spider on the front and his face is smeared with warpaint, as is the bass player’s. The five-piece show their professionalism and 25-year experience, playing an impressive two-hour set featuring songs from their entire back catalogue without even breaking sweat. The band visibly enjoys the set, which is understandably full of recent tracks from their self-titled album from this year such as ‘Asteroids’ and ‘Blood On Your Hands’. That said, plenty of old gems still get an airing including ‘Wardance’, ‘Follow the Leaders’ and ‘Empire Song’, all of which remain as relevant today as they were when they were written.
Their high-energy drum beats, catchy synthesiser patterns and doom and gloom guitaring, all set to anarchic protest lyrics, sets a strange atmosphere and the political banter between songs adds to this.
All in all, we’re treated to a raw and dynamic show from one of the best industrial acts you’re ever likely to see.
