[kj] YEAR END POLL FOR `03
hello!

am i too late for this? been too busy to keep up with going on on the =
gathering, but blissfully home for christmas now...

stu.

  1) Your Name:

  stu fowkes

  2) Your Age:

  25

  3) Are you married and have you any children?=20

  nope.

  4) I live here:

  oxford, england.

  5) I've been a member of the Gathering since:

  ooh, 1999 i think.=20

  6) What do you want for X-mas?

lots of humming machinery, analogue keyboards and little boxes that go =
'woo'.

  7) Your biggest extravagance of the year?

financially speaking? hmm, that'd be a microkorg. worth every penny, =
mind.=20

  8) Your biggest hopes for 2004?

personally speaking, staying happy & healthy would do me. although =
it'd be nice if my band could somehow open for KJ.

  9) What was the last album you bought, why, and how is it?:

dead cities, red seas and lost ghosts by m83. the reviews i'd read =
branding it as an electronic my bloody valentine were too much to =
resist. the reality obviously isn't as fine as that, and it occasionally =
wanders into dodgy vangelis territory, but when it peaks, it's =
wonderful. great big sheets of synth noise, kinda like flynig saucer =
attack of you replaced the sheets of guitar with analogue synth noises.

  10) Not including the new Killing Joke album, what were your top five =
favorite releases of the year?

  wire -send
erase errata - at crystal palace
ove-naxx - bullets over habikino city hxcx
cat on form - structure and fear
kid koala - some of my best friends are djs

  11) What live bands have you seen recently. Did they rate?

mostly local bands, who i see on a pretty much weekly basis. there's a =
lot of nu-metal dross and oasis wannabes (still...!) in oxford, but =
there are some amazing bands people'd do well to check out, like the =
edmund fitzgerald, youthmovie soundtrack strategies, the workhouse =
and... headcount!

  12) Worst music you heard all year:

any of that faux-retro guitar band nonsense. i hope it was a flash in =
the pan. mind you, some of the bands harking back to gang of four et al. =
were pretty neat.=20

  13) If I find out that the person I'm talking to is a big fan of =
________, I lose all interest in talking to them (note: your answer need =
not be restricted to music)

anything like royksopp, lemon jelly or any of that other sloblocks =
coffee table electro stuff. oh, and nickelback.=20

  14) Band(s) most in need of reforming/touring/releasing new material:

any of unwound, the birthday party or bikini kill. and the jesus =
lizard.=20

  15) Band(s) most in need of hanging it up and calling it a day:

starsailor should be involved in some sort of accident.=20

  16) Albums most in need of re-mastering and re-release deluxe stylee:

i'd love it if sonic youth did the same remastering/releasing with =
loads of hidden tracks thing that they did for dirty with confusion is =
sex.=20

  17) Most overrated music of the year:

the darkness, without a doubt. i don't care if they're joking, or if =
i'm joyless and prematurely old for hating them.=20

  18) Most underrated music of the year:

dido is world famous. cat power isn't. how does stuff like that =
happen?

  19) Next to Killing Joke, my top five favorite bands/artists are:

that's difficult. erm. shellac, the birthday party, sonic youth, wire, =
le tigre. off the top of my head. i'll regret that in a minute.

  20) Express your views on Killing Joke's presence on the Internet

i think KJ are pretty well represented by the rather wonderful =
websites we have on offer at the moment, actually. especially in terms =
of rare material being accessible for downloading and so forth.=20

  22) Regarding the Joke, despite all the rumormongering, I'd really =
like the following to happen:

  23) Did you get to see Killing Joke on this tour? If so, briefly =
explain your reaction

this is not a question i much care for, since two days before the =
astoria gig that would've been my KJ live debut, i sustained a pretty =
bad back injury and was bed-ridden for a week. gutted doesn't even come =
close.=20

  24) What would you have rather seen on the album cover, other than the =
red Krusty Clown?

  some of colesy's stuff, please.=20

  25) Favorite track on the new album:

  i think seeing red, actually.
  26) Least favorite track on the new album:

still don't care much for loose cannon. or the house that...

  27) Were it up to you to have chosen the first single, it would have =
been:

  wardance, heh.=20

  28) Have you managed to see "the Year of the Devil" as yet? Your =
thoughts?

  nope.

  29) Outside of Andy Gill, who would you like to see produce the next =
Killing Joke record?

steve albini, without a doubt. he records bands how they ACTUALLY =
SOUND, which is how i'd like to hear KJ.=20

  30) Killing Joke track that best sums up the world today:

  requiem. even now.=20

  31) Have you bought anything from Malicious Damage yet? If not, WHAT =
THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

nope, although i have my eyes on about half a dozen things malicious =
damage-related. i'm waiting for the season of goodwill to end.=20

  32) Goods you'd like to see made available on Mike Coles estimable =
site?

live bootlegs. on vinyl. (er, or cd).

  33) Following the 2004 Elections, I'd like to see this man in the =
White House:

pretty much anyone but george w. given a choice though, how about =
steve albini, when he's done with the new kj record?

  34) Do you feel 'safer' now that Saddam Hussein has been apprehended?

  nope, not in the slightest.=20

  36) Where is Osama Bin Laden:

  swindon?

  37) Have we seen the last of terrorism courtesy of Islamists on the =
homefront (US/UK/EUR)?

  somehow, i doubt it.

  38) Do you feel prepared for another such instance?

not sure how i'm supposed to be 'prepared'...

  39) Do you think Iraq had anything to do with the events of September =
11, 2001?

perhaps. will we ever know for sure though, really?

  40) Where were you/what were you doing on that day?

working at my last job. then spending the afternoon hunched over a =
portable radio listening in disbelief. .=20

  43) They want replace Franklin Delano Roosevelt's face on the American =
Dime with the face of Ronald Reagan. What is your reaction:

can't say it affects me, although i imagine that most americans =
wouldn't be so happy about that one.

  44) George W. Bush is an idiot: True or False. Explain your feeling =
why you feel this way. Support your argument:

i think this has been documented by hundreds of journalists and =
websites with greater eloquence and a stronger weight of evidence than i =
could possibly muster, so go and read them. suffice it to say that the =
longer he's president, the worse things will probably get.=20

  45) Under which American administration was the world/your own =
situation better off: Bush's or Clinton's?

well, on the principle that anything would be better than the current =
bush administration, i'd have to say clinton's, but purely from the =
'lesser of two evils' point of view. blimey, i'm all depressed now.=20
